Select Demo was contracted directly by Suffolk Construction Co. to perform the complete demolition and asbestos abatement of this 3-story, 85,000 SF concrete, cast-in-place building located in the heavily populated Longwood Medical & Academic Area and just steps from Fenway Park. Select’s abatement scope consisted of the removal of miscellaneous exterior caulking and adhesives, including roof flashings and asbestos hot mop coat. A Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Non-Traditional Work Plan was required due to asbestos mastic being present on the building’s façade and all interior slabs requiring 10,000 tons of non-friable asbestos material to be bulk loaded and removed. Select’s scope also included a complete building separation by hand from the adjacent building. Rooms that were in contact with the separation included sensitive data materials, and Select performed the separation with no disruptions to their day-to-day operations and no damage to adjacent structures. This project led way to the construction of a new 5-story, 285,000 SF office, medical and lab building.
