Select Demo Services, LLC was contracted by Suffolk Construction to perform the highly specialized dismantling and removal of the iconic Boston CITGO sign and its supporting steel structure as part of the redevelopment of 650 Beacon Street. The project involved removal of the 60-foot by 60-foot rooftop CITGO sign, located approximately 150 feet above grade, utilizing a 500-ton crane.
The sign was dismantled into four equal sections, with each piece carefully lowered to the ground for processing and preservation. Following removal of the sign, the structural steel dunnage and support framing were dismantled into two major sections and crane-lifted to the ground. Select Demo’s scope also included rooftop protection measures, spot lead abatement associated with torch-cutting operations, and full-time health and safety oversight throughout the project.
This landmark project showcased Select Demo’s expertise in complex urban dismantlement, heavy crane operations, and precision structural removal. Through detailed planning and controlled execution, Select successfully completed its scope while helping facilitate the preservation and relocation of one of Boston’s most recognizable landmarks.
