Project Value Range: $1.5 million - $2.5 million
Select Demo was contracted by SKANSKA’s Heavy-Civil Division to perform two phases of demolition and asbestos abatement as part of the MA DOT / MBTA Maffa Way/Mystic Avenue Bridge Superstructure Replacement Project, which entailed the replacement of two deteriorated bridge superstructures that carried vehicles and pedestrians over the MBTA’s Orange Line and Commuter Rail in Boston and Somerville. This construction project was performed to improve public safety and the reliability of critical infrastructure in a high-traffic corridor. Select’s demolition scope consisted of the removal and disposal of the entire superstructure of both bridges, including bituminous wearing surface, concrete bridge decks, steel stringers and diaphragms, bearings, railings, and bridge utilities. Steel beams were picked up via cranes staged on each abutment. Reinforced concrete excavation consisted of the required removal and disposal of the substructures, including the piers, backwalls, and abutments. The asbestos abatement scope took place in Phase 2 and consisted of the removal of four (4) 4" diameter transite pipes, as well as the removal of asbestos conduit which crossed the bridge on Maffa Way.
